Agriculture
- A robust farm community.
Yesterday and today.
Agriculture is
big business in the Upper Sandusky area. Throughout the
county, more than 600 farms operate daily with an average farm
size of 345 acres. A total of 216,000 acres is devoted to
farmland in Wyandot County. With an average annual rainfall of
32.5 inches, plus 41 inches of snow comprising a typical
county winter, natural water sources are good, and they blend
nicely with today’s high tech, large scale, watering
techniques. Excellent soil for crops is abundant.
Each year, just
less than $83 million of agricultural commodities produced in
Wyandot County are readied for market. Some 70 percent of crop
sales include corn, soybeans and wheat. Other products include
dairy and beef cattle, swine, fruit, vegetables, plus several
of nature’s products like honey and maple syrup. Grain
harvests each year are supported by new technologies that aid
farm workers significantly, helping them work hand-in-glove
with a number of local grain elevator operations and
fertilizer dealers.
While farming is
big business, it also provides beautiful landscapes.
Esthetically-pleasing farms abound throughout Wyandot County.
Farming has a rich family heritage in the Upper Sandusky area,
dating back to Native American families who first farmed the
land more than three centuries ago.
