- Preparatory
education. Ranking, diverse schools.
While
most communities talk about the quality of their preparatory
public school education programs, Upper Sandusky and other
public school districts in Wyandot County – Carey Exempted
Village, Mohawk Local, Ridgedale, Riverdale and Wynford –
combine each year to ready students for college or trade
schools by attaining a category that ranks with the most
successful in Ohio.
For example,
Upper Sandusky Exempted Village Schools, administering to some
1,800 students annually, consistently receives an “effective”
rating from the Ohio Department of Education for proficiency
testing of its students. The smaller school districts
mentioned above have achieved a similar rating, placing all
Wyandot County schools in the “quality education”
category.
The Upper
Sandusky district is comprised of three K-5 elementary
schools. Each elementary school conducts full-day kindergarten
classes, which prepares children early-on to meet the
challenge of a thorough education process. Upper Sandusky’s
Middle School, for grades 6-8, features a modified format with
curriculum that includes art and vocational home economics,
while the high school is a traditional 9-12 grade operation
that offers more than 70 courses designed to prepare students
for a trade or college.
Junior and
senior students can take courses at Sentinel Career Center 30
minutes away in Tiffin.
All Upper
Sandusky Schools are computer-stocked and Internet-connected,
with mobile computer labs being a part of the middle school
learning process along with wireless laptop connectivity for
today’s accelerated learning pace. The high school offers
student labs in business and keyboarding, as well as an
industrial/technical computer lab, which includes special
training by area businesses.
Two
parochial schools are located in Wyandot County – St. Peter’s
Catholic School in Upper Sandusky, a K-6 elementary school
with an extended-day program, and the K-8 Our Lady of
Consolation School of Carey.
The educational
needs for local disabled residents are met by Angeline School
and Industries, which enrolls students ages 6-21 in a
multi-classroom facility just north of Upper Sandusky.
Angeline also offers full-day preschool, an early intervention
program for children from birth to age 2, a vocational skills
program for 14 and older, and an adult activities center for
seniors.
